DeVos Institute Leads National Board Development Intensive, May 23 in Washington, D.C.

February 09, 2016

The DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the University of Maryland, a global leader in arts management training and consultation, is pleased to announce a one-day intensive for arts managers and their boards.

The National Board Development Intensive will take place May 23, 2016, at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., and is open to staff and board members from arts and cultural organizations nationwide. In conjunction with the intensive, an optional one-hour consultation on May 24 with DeVos Institute leadership will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis to participants for an additional fee.

DeVos Institute Chairman Michael M. Kaiser and President Brett Egan will define “rules of engagement” between effective staffs and board. This intensive will help participants design – through case studies, question-and-answer sessions, and one-on-one consultation – a lean, focused, and consistent approach to leverage every ounce of goodwill, talent, and resource offered on both sides of the staff-board partnership.

The National Board Development Intensive is most relevant to organizations in the following disciplines:

  • Performing and visual arts;
  • Community-based artistic practice;
  • Arts education;
  • Historical, science, and educational (museums and centers);
  • Literary;
  • Film and media; and
  • Other cultural non-profits that require strong marketing and fundraising, including gardens, libraries, multi-tenant cultural facilities, and craft (glass, print, etc.).

Leaders join boards with the best of intentions: to support and steward organizations that elevate, inspire, and enhance their communities through exemplary art.

But – intentions aside – a quickly changing environment (technological, economic, and demographic) has greatly complicated the job of both the manager and the board member. Today, more than ever, arts organizations and their boards have no time, and no money, to waste.

In response, the DeVos Institute has designed this intensive for staff and board members with the goal of putting mission, long-term planning, and impact at the center of the conversation between managers and their boards.

The deadline to register is May 9, 2016.
